In Hindi, the name means "golden",〔(Baby Name Indian Girl: Girl Baby names beginning with S )〕 derived from सोना ''sonāa'' "gold", from Sanskrit (सुवर्ण ) ''suvarṇa'' (''su'' "good" + ''varṇa'' "color").
